Using union benefits for family fun

Posted Jun. 12, 2019 by

Doug Kaple, a Bureau of Worker’s Compensation OCSEA member from Lima, has used the union’s exclusive membership benefits before. He’s taken his family to both Cedar Point and Kings Island using OCSEA’s Family Fun Coupons at deep discounts for Ohio theme parks. Family Fun theme parks and other exclusive event discounts through OCSEA Extras are available beginning in May each year.

But this time, he and his two kids were super excited to attend their first Cavs games and couldn’t believe the seats they scored using OCSEA’s member discount to see the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the New Orleans Pelicans. Cavalier tickets and other Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (formerly Quicken Loans Arena) discounts are available all year to members through OCSEA Extras benefits.

“We were right down near the floor,” said Doug about the seats he bought that had his family just five rows from the floor of the arena. Not only were the seats the best he’s ever had, his kids got to go down on the floor and get selfies and autographs with some of the star players.

“I mean, we were right there watching Anthony Davis shooting free throws,” he said. “It was really neat.” Doug says it was easy to get the tickets on OCSEA’s website and that he was surprised he was able to get seats so close, even for an almost-sold-out game.

Doug tries to encourage other members to check out the benefits the union provides. To check out the new benefit and all OCSEA’s exclusive benefits, go to OCSEA.org/Extras.

Last year, Doug reached out to OCSEA to ask about a discount to hotels inside Cedar Point’s theme park. Although the union was not able to honor his request last year, this year, AFSCME, OCSEA’s parent affiliate, was able to reach a discount agreement with the Breakers and Express Hotel at Cedar Point. This discount is available throughout the summer as a part of the OCSEA Family Fun discounts. Make sure to check out all the summer member-only deals for theme parks, water parks, zoos and more.

Doug is a Safety Consultant for BWC dealing with OSHA compliance for companies and organizations in both the private and public sectors in the Lima region. His children are Brayden, 14 and Briley, 10.
