Action Alert: Columbus public hearing on legislation to repeal WEP/GPO is next Friday!

OCSEA members and retirees, here’s your chance to show support for legislation that would repeal WEP/GPO and restore your Social Security benefits.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will hold a field hearing next week in Columbus on his bipartisan legislation (S. 597) to abolish the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision which penalize government employees who worked in the private sector. WEP/GPO cuts Social Security benefits for more than 240,000 Ohioans including members of OCSEA.

Senator Brown will host the public hearing Friday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Columbus Firefighters Local 67 union hall located at 379 W. Broad Street in downtown Columbus. OCSEA members/retirees who wish to attend should arrive by 9:30 a.m. because space is limited and seating is on a first come first served basis.

Repeal WEP/GPO Field Hearing

Friday, June 7, 2024

379 W. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215

WEP can reduce Social Security benefits for public employees by up to 55% while GPO cuts benefits for spouses and widow(er)s. These so-called Social Security offsets disproportionately harm middle-class retirees and their survivors, especially women. Senator Brown introduced the Social Security Fairness Act (S. 597) with Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) and the legislation has both Republican and Democrat cosponsors.

This is a problem that not only affects current retirees but also future retirees for OCSEA and other public employee unions. Send a message to members of Congress that you won’t stand for cuts to Social Security anymore by clicking HERE
