Lucasville 25 years later: Remember, reflect and honor

Posted May 23, 2018 by

On May 22, supporters of Ohio's Corrections Officers and prison employees gathered to reflect on 25 years since the deadly siege on the state prison located in Lucasville, Ohio. The Lucasville Riot took place Easter weekend 1993 and resulted in the senseless death of union brother Robert "Bobbie" Vallandingham. The event also honored all 16 prison employees killed on the job since the origination of the state's penal system. A startling 31 percent of those employees killed on the job worked at the maximum security prison (now the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility) located in Lucasville.

Guests also took time to pray for SOCF union brother Matt Mathias, who was stabbed on the job by two inmates on Feb. 20 of this year. He continues on the long road of recovery. See the event's photo gallery.
