Save the date! Working People's Day of Action is Feb. 24

Posted Jan. 24, 2018 by

Mark your calendars to attend the Working People's Day of Action on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.

Attacks against working people are mounting! From proposed anti-worker ballot initiatives in Ohio to a national court case that could make the entire nation Right to Work, working people and their union rights are under attack. But workers aren't standing down! In one of the biggest events since Senate Bill 5, thousands of working people will converge on the Ohio Statehouse on Feb. 24 to stand up for the freedom to come together in strong unions and fight. Gathering begins at 10:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon.

The Working People's Day of Action, taking place in 10 cities across the nation on Feb. 24, is about demanding an end to the rigged economy. OCSEA members will lead the way in Columbus to stand up for the freedom of working people to come together and have a voice on the job. When working people have the freedom to join a strong union and negotiate a fair return for their work, everyone benefits.

OCSEA is currently reaching out to the union membership by phone to encourage participation. Bus shuttles will be available from all over the state.

At the Statehouse, just like with Senate Bill 5, politicians are trying to make Ohio a Right to Work state with six proposed anti-worker ballot initiatives. And nationally, a U.S. Supreme Court case called Janus vs. AFSCME Council 31 would make the entire country Right to Work for public employees if the court sides with big business and anti-union groups like the Koch Brothers, ALEC and the National Right to Work Committee. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the case on Feb. 26, two days following the Working People's Day of Action! For these reasons and more, we need a strong showing of workers in Ohio–public and private–against these attacks on February 24.

"We really need the support and the participation of our entire membership to show elected officials we mean business! With all the attacks on working people, America needs unions now more than ever!" said OCSEA President Chris Mabe.

OCSEA members, families and supporters are encouraged to participate. Chapters should encourage members to attend and take a stand for their union rights. Buses will be leaving from locations around the state to make sure as many members as possible can attend.

"Unions are THE most effective vehicle for working people to get the power in numbers they need to speak up for their families and their communities," said Mabe. "Real freedom is having your hard work result in a decent living. But policy makers continue to make things worse for working people. This has to stop!"
