New member-only benefit takes effect TODAY!
|
Starting today, October 1, your union will provide NO COST workplace security insurance, a $10,000 insurance policy exclusively to members of the union. The benefit will automatically apply to all dues-paying OCSEA members.
OCSEA has teamed up with Pearl Insurance to offer the workplace security insurance, which covers death and dismemberment while on the job and hostage situations. The $10,000 insurance policy will be provided at absolutely no cost to members, but only to members. Non-members can receive the benefit if they sign a card with the union.
Previously, the union only provided coverage for members who are on the frontlines in dangerous jobs at DRC and DYS. "Now we are thrilled to expand the coverage to ALL members, including those frontline agencies," said President Chris Mabe.

ICYMI! Partial coverage option for GLP-1 medications
|
In case you missed it, last week the Joint Health Care Committee (JHCC) announced, after union pressure regarding weight loss coverage, that the state will offer discounted GLP1s for weight loss. Please note, the state will continue its coverage for GLP1s for diabetics with no changes.
The program will be run through Virta, the state’s weight loss vendor, and will offer a 50 percent cost reduction per month for approved GLP1s for weight loss. Additionally, the state will also offer a monthly reimbursement of $200 for up to 2,500 state employees to cover the cost of approved GLP1s for weight loss. Participation in the Virta Sustainable Weight Loss Program is required to receive the GLP1 monthly medication discount and monthly subsidy reimbursement and is only available to State of Ohio employees. Please note, at this time, only spouses who are also state employees will be eligible for the discount and reimbursement subsidy. A previous communication on the benefit incorrectly indicated that spouses will also be eligible. Spouses are ONLY eligible, at this time, if they, too, are employed by the State of Ohio.

United Steelworkers in Toledo need our help! Join Oct. 7 rally for fair contract!
|
Calling all union activists! We need your help to support the United Steelworkers in Toledo, Ohio. The USW will hold a rally on Tuesday, October 7 starting a 8 a.m. demanding a fair contract that doesn't harm workers and their communities!
Steelworkers in Toledo are in the middle of some very frustrating negotiations with Libbey Glassware. Basically the union took goodwill concessions during the last round of negotiations to help keep the company afloat with the promise of a better contract when the company's finances turned around. The employer didn't keep its end of the goodwill bargain!
To coincide with a major glass conference being held in Toledo on Oct. 7, the USW will hold a rally to let the glass industry know what's really going on. "Libbey's Greed Has Got To Go!" says the USW. Share the rally flyer here with any union activists you know.

AFSCME’s Saunders: Shutting down the government won’t hide health care crisis that anti-worker extremists started
|
WASHINGTON – AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement after anti-worker extremists in Congress refused to address massive cuts to health care and rising costs, resulting in a government shutdown:
“As families across the country are crushed by skyrocketing health care costs, anti-worker extremists in Congress are driving a shutdown rather than funding public services, protecting care for millions and keeping hospitals open. The administration and its yes-men and women in Congress created a health care crisis that has pushed our system to the brink of collapse and now they’re treating federal workers like bargaining chips. They’re threatening the very people who inspect our food, protect our water, and keep our communities safe, all to shield tax breaks for billionaires and corporations that don't need another dime.
“This shutdown is a one-two punch for working families: On top of crumbling health care access, communities will now lose critical federal services they depend on every day. Workers understand that this is a choice, and that anti-worker politicians chose to protect billionaire wealth while abandoning the rest of us. Enough. It’s time to stop playing games with our health, our jobs and our families. Fund the government. Fix the health care crisis. And put working people first.”
