Remembering William Lucy, ‘one of our greatest warriors ever for civil rights, labor rights and human rights’

This week, AFSCME President Lee Saunders released a tribute to AFSCME International Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus William Lucy. He died at his Washington, D.C., home yesterday, Sept. 25, at the age of 90. Brother Lucy served for 38 years as the International's Secretary-Treasurer and co-founded the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU).

“Bill Lucy was a giant, one of the most accomplished and influential trade unionists ever—in any country, at any moment in history. He did as much as anyone to advance the dignity of all working people here in the United States and around the world. He was one of our greatest warriors ever for civil rights, labor rights and human rights," said Pres. Saunders.

He continued: “From his leadership in the 1968 Memphis sanitation strike, to the founding of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, to his role in defeating and dismantling South African apartheid, he was a courageous trailblazer. On behalf of 1.4 million AFSCME members, I am so grateful for his visionary leadership from the moment he first joined our union nearly 70 years ago.

“On a personal level, he was a mentor to me, someone I leaned on for counsel and wisdom. I stand on his shoulders, and I will continue to be inspired by his example. Rest in power, brother,” said Saunders.

We Are Ohio and Union Strong will continue to hold Urgent Member Meetings throughout the state to bring together workers, labor leaders, good government advocates and supporters to raise awareness about Issue 1.

Voting Yes on Ohio's Issue 1 would create fair districts and fair elections in the state by creating a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission made up of Democratic, Republican, and Independent citizens who broadly represent the different geographic areas and demographics of the state. Ohio AFL-CIO says Yes on Issue 1 is good for union workers, bipartisanship

Ohio labor’s support in passing Issue 1 was on full display this week at the Ohio AFL-CIO convention in Cleveland. The Ohio AFL-CIO has named Ohio Issue 1 a top electoral priority for the Nov. 5 election, says OCSEA President Chris Mabe who chairs the Ohio AFL-CIO Legislative Committee. If passed, the Citizens Not Politicians amendment, Issue 1, will create a new redistricting commission made up of citizens—not career politicians and corporate lobbyists––who will be responsible for drawing up voting districts.

"No matter where you stand politically, Issue 1 evens the playing field and helps avert extreme politicians who have no problem coming after our union rights like we saw with Senate Bill 5," said Pres. Mabe.

“We are sick of playing defense in Ohio. We are going on offense with the ballot initiative Citizens Not Politicians,” said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga at the convention. “This ballot measure is a game changer for organized labor. Fair districting means politicians can’t cherry pick voters anymore…they have to earn the workers’ votes.”

OCSEA Pres. Chris Mabe sets forth the legislative agenda at the 2024 Ohio AFL-CIO Convention in Cleveland this week. Mabe served as the Legislative Chair at the convention and spoke about the need to vote YES on Issue 1 for fair districts and fewer extreme politicians.
