House committee puts off dental bill addition

In a surprise about-face, the committee that was scheduled to include Senate Bill 160, the dangerous dental bill, into another bill to fast track it through committee, announced it would be refraining from doing so at today's hearing. Ohio House Health Provider Services Committee today indicated they are “putting off” including the dental amendment in Senate Bill 40. While the committee could take it up again as early as next week, this is still a testament to the power of union activism.

This underscores the power of our membership to make legislators think twice about controversial bills,” said OCSEA President Chris Mabe. “When we work together, we are a force to be reckoned with. But we must keep up the pressure to stop this bill,” he said. "I want to thank all the activists who made the calls. This is how battles are won: one small victory at a time."

Mabe also sent a letter to House Minority Leader Russo and Speaker of the House Stephens encouraging them to reconsider the amendment. In it he said:

“As the leader of the largest state employee’s union, I am deeply committed to both the physical well-being and financial security of our members. This potential legislation would have harmful effects on our members and on all Ohioans, impacting both their health and financial stability. The dental bill, in its current form, prioritizes the interests of the dental lobby and industry over patient care and the economic welfare of Ohio residents, including members of our union, OCSEA.”

“While we’re encouraged by this development, we will stand vigilant knowing that this issue could resurface in the near future,” said Mabe. OCSEA activists have been diligently working against this bill and others like it for 12 years.

If passed, the bill would prevent dental insurance providers, like Delta Dental, from negotiating lower fees for non-covered services for their members, including OCSEA union members. Basically, it takes away the bargaining power that comes with having a benefits provider and gives dentists the ability to charge ANY AMOUNT of money they want for non-covered services.

National Work Zone Awareness Week: Educating our communities to keep road workers safe

It's National Work Zone Awareness Week, and we're doing our part to keep our union brothers and sisters who work along the highways safe. National Work Zone Awareness Week, taking place this week April 15-19, is an annual event to remind motorists to be extra alert in work zones.

Will you join us in keeping our state and county OCSEA transportation brothers and sisters safe? See events below.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, so far this year, 43 ODOT crews have been struck while working along our roadways. That's nearly doubled since we reported on this chronic problem just this February in the winter edition of the OCSEA magazine. This compares to 56 ODOT crews hit all of last year, according to the agency. In all, last year, an astonishing 14 ODOT workers and nine contractors were injured in work zone crashes, with one contractor killed, sadly.

“We’ve always known the dangers associated with ODOT members working on our highways, no matter the season. But a rise in technology at our fingertips is increasing those dangers,” says Omar Parker, an ODOT Highway Technician 2 and Vice President of Cuyahoga Highway ODOT Chapter 1804. Omar remarkably avoided serious injury when his snow plow was hit earlier this year by a distracted driver along the highway in Cleveland. You can read his story HERE on page 3 of the union magazine.

"One of the biggest tips I have for drivers, if you have a breakdown or wreck, is to pull over as far to the side of the road as possible, if possible. So many secondary accidents happen because of vehicles blocking lanes and onlookers getting distracted," said ODOT HT 2 Donald Campbell who serves as OCSEA District 2 President and Chapter 5700 chief steward. "This is just one way we can cut down on multiple accidents and make sure our brothers and sisters come home safe to their families every night," he says.

“We’ve always known the dangers associated with ODOT members working on our highways, no matter the season. But a rise in technology at our fingertips is increasing those dangers.”
